Who We Are

The North Carolina State Society DAR is an organization within the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The work of the society is carried out by our officers, committees, chapters, and members who volunteer in their local communities and throughout the state.

We are a non-profit, non-political, volunteer women’s service organization that honors and supports our veterans, educators, students, local community volunteers, and groups involved in historic preservation.

Our society is passionate about genealogy and tracing links to our ancestors through research. Members share the bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America.

Activities and Projects

Our State Society is involved in many types of volunteer efforts. Throughout the state, our members place wreaths at American Revolution battlefields (Moores Creek, Kings Mountain, Guilford Courthouse, and others), sew thousands of masks for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, deliver care packages to first responders and veterans medical centers, and support active duty military with care packages delivered overseas and to the USO. Chapters and individual members have also been supportive of the newly-constructed Veterans Life Center in Butner, North Carolina, a facility designed to help at-risk 21st century veterans with the goal of helping veterans achieve self-reliance within two years.

Our members support local schools with care packages and supplies for teachers and sponsor scholarships and awards for students. In 2019, through the Community Classroom project, North Carolina chapters donated 11,000 books to school libraries that were damaged by hurricanes. We also send supplies and essential items to the Crossnore School and Children’s Home located in Crossnore and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Many members enjoy dressing in historical attire and educating students about a wide range of subjects including the American Revolution, Constitution Week, and the women’s suffrage movement.

Chapters and members throughout the state assist with naturalization ceremonies and provide a warm welcome to newly naturalized U.S. citizens. Chapters promote conservation gardens, educate members about women’s issues, and offer training ranging from genealogy workshops to membership. Recognizing our community leaders for their efforts is also important to the mission of the DAR, as many chapters honor local individuals with Community Service Awards and Historic Preservation Recognition Awards.
